This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
